Mortgages After Separation or Divorce
A separation or divorce often means restructuring a mortgage, whether buying out a partner or arranging a new mortgage alone. Both legal and lending steps are involved.
Common situations
You may need to remove a partner from the mortgage and ownership (a transfer of equity), sometimes with a buy-out funded by additional borrowing, or arrange a new mortgage on your own. Affordability is assessed on the remaining borrower.
The lender must consent to any change of borrower.
Legal and financial advice
These decisions have legal and financial consequences, so take legal advice alongside mortgage advice to coordinate the steps.

General mortgage information, not a personal recommendation. Lender criteria and scheme rules can change. Ask an adviser about your circumstances and a solicitor or tax adviser about legal or tax questions. Your home may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments on your mortgage. Most buy-to-let mortgages are not regulated by the FCA.
