Remortgage Planning and Switching Guides

A mortgage review begins with the deal you already have. Gather the balance, term and charge dates, then compare staying with the current lender against moving to a new one.

Plan the dates before choosing a product

The end of a fixed rate, the expiry of an early repayment charge and the expiry of a new offer can be different dates. Lenders also have different advance-selection windows. Allow time for income, property and legal checks rather than assuming a guaranteed completion period.

Staying can be an option, not a default

A product transfer may be simpler when borrowing is unchanged, but convenience does not establish the lowest total cost. A new-lender mortgage may have different fees and checks. Explain any additional borrowing, ownership changes or new letting use before comparing.

Weigh costs and conditional incentives

Include early repayment charges, product and third-party fees and the interest effect of financing fees. Check the balance left after the comparison period. Any cashback amount and payment conditions should be confirmed in writing.

If you are considering overpayments instead, check the lender's allowance and how payments are applied. The illustration cannot replace the actual contract terms.
